The heater blower for the Mitsubishi NP Pajero/Montero/Shogun is handed. LHD & RHD ones rotate in the same direction but have reversed blades. So if you fit an incorrect one like I just did, you get lots of noise but damn all blowing action.

Secondarily, I learned that the photo on the ebay ad for the Chinese knockoff one I bought is a mirror image of the actual, i.e. it makes a Montero (LHD) one look just like a Pajero (RHD) one. No chance of getting a refund, I expect - now I know there’s a difference I see the one I bought was only listed as compatible with Montero, not Pajero.

So that was a waste of $60. Unless I can press the fans off the new owner and the old dead one and swap them. I’ll give that a go on Monday.

Ed it: Ignore the bit  re rotate in the same direction. They rotate the opposite way too - I only checked that it was the correct rotation for the blower, not the same as the old one. So if I swap the fans out I’ll need to swap the connections too.

My guess: the wiring harness is also different, so that the power supplied to the fan is reversed between LHD and RHD, thus reversing fan rotation.

Makes sense. The airbox is probably mirrored from LHD to RHD, meaning you need to move air the other direction out of the housing . You may want to confirm they don’t spin opposite directions as well before attempting to move the fan over. They’ll still push the air the same direction (outwards) regardless of the direction of the motor compared to the angle of the fan blades (and the air’s exit from the housing) but one direction needs to turn much faster to move the same amount of air, and makes more noise while doing it.

The outlet of the airbox for a squirrel cag e blower is asymmetric, so if you want to have handed airboxes (i.e. both exiting towards the front centre of the dash) you need handed fans too.

Yup, it is mirrored . And that matte rs, on a squirrel cage, where it wouldn’t with an axial or backward-curved blower. I already confirmed they rota te the same way - my first thought was that it was wired wrong.

I thought about that too, and that case seemed rotationally symmetric to me, though I guess I assumed the vent angle was on the circle’s normal vector. I’m guessing the airflow passages out of the blower are more sharply angled?

Oh yeah, I just searched for squirrel cages, and the airflow exit is basically along a tangent vector. That makes a lot more sense.
